Its upper reaches (north of Lowbridge) are carved through limestone gorges, with cliffs ranging from 10 to 100 ft in places. Its lower reaches are rolling hills. It was dredged heavily along the middle/lower reaches for nearly 100 years, but that effort has stopped in the last few years.
