Cosmic Forge
From Dreams of Hope
One of the relics of the Creator, supposedly. Legends paint it as a quill pen the size of a tall man's outstretched arm, said to be a feather of the Creator itself. When you pick it up, spectral tendrils reach out and latch onto your arm; you write in the ink of your own existence.
What is known is the following:
- Under appropriate conditions (which are not generally known), this artifact draws in candidates from all over the world to the Eternal Library in Tal Elamor.
- From those candidates, one gains the chance to wield the pen and write a Wish.
- In doing so, they cease to ever have existed. Everything that they did and said was done by someone else; all memory of them is erased as if it never existed. Only the Wish remains.
- Writers can fail; if they do, they cease from existence but the Wish is malformed and rejected, of no effect.
- The Wishes so written change the fundamental rules by which the Great Mechanism orders creation. Wishes that conflict with other directives or would leave the world in an inconsistent state are rejected; the writer and Wish has failed.
- Four such wishes have been successfully written throughout the ages (see Ages of the World for details).
- Once used, the Cosmic Forge becomes inert until its activation time looms again.
