Breeland

One of the most prosperous nations resulting from the breakup of the Duarchy of Kotimaa. Located where the Kaela River turns to the west, it encompasses Merrybranch (and the rest of the former County Tsun territory) as well as the former Farthingale Duchy. Its capital is Bradford.

History

Founded in 258 AC after the death of Lady Coldwind, it gained the official protection of the residents of Hero's Rest and is governed by Betsy Farthingale.

Government

Breeland is a constitutional republic, with a Duke as the head of state and a ruling council elected by the towns and regions. It's still young, so it's still working out the kinks. Each town has elected leadership, often a mayor and council. An independent judiciary is constitutionally mandated--the council and Duke do not have the independent right to punish anyone except in extremis (such as invasion). Generally, the Duke is the military and foreign policy leader, the council (where the Duke has a veto) is the legislative arm, and the judiciary mediates disputes.

Culture and Religion

Religious pluralism and tolerance is guaranteed by the constitution--the ruling council has a group of religious advisors it consults about moral issues, but the advisors' rulings are not binding.

Culturally, it's heavily wall-builder. Both humans and halflings (the dominant lineages) participate.
