Broken Concept

From Dreams of Hope

The name given to the major followers of the Nameless during the Dawn War. These immortal beings were incarnations of concepts, alien to mortals in mindset and goals. When they fell, those incarnations were shattered, broken. Cast into the Abyss with their leader, they existed for eons. Occasionally, they would leak (or be summoned) into the mortal plane. This inevitably wrought havoc as nature fought back. In sufficient density, their presence would even serve to break portions free of the flow of space and time, creating unstable pockets of altered reality. These were the original demons. Unlike modern demons, they did not need to subsist on mortal souls--they were self-empowered.

In smaller-scale events, Concepts would form mortal incarnations, as if wearing a meat-puppet (of incredible power). These incarnations could be fought and destroyed; the Concept could not (antedating the planes themselves). At the Cataclysm, the sacrifice of the Unbroken served to bridge the gap, accepting the majority of the Broken Concepts back into full alignment. As such, very few Concepts remain (although their diminished incarnations are still a threat in some areas).
