Church of Night Reborn

From Dreams of Hope

When Nocthis was reborn due to the efforts of the Airship Pioneers in 212 AC, she wasted no time in calling her long-time faithful back to the fold. Approximately half of the Night's Child population of Byssia surged to rejoin her cult as soon as the first priestesses were called via revelation from the newly re-ascended being. In some ways, the Church of Night Reborn is the same as the old Church of Night before the Cataclysm; other tenets have changed both due to a change of heart on Nocthis's part and different needs of the people.

A highly compartmentalized religion, there are different tenets for various "circles" or ranks.

Tenets of the Outer Circle

  • Seek not to know secrets you can't withstand.
  • Listen to the priestesses and trust their wisdom.
  • Trust not the outside world. Interact with them freely, but keep your secrets and learn theirs.

Tenets of the Inner Circles

Are you a member of the Inner Circles? Then yeah. No secrets for you.

The number of circles is unknown to anyone not part of the innermost circle. If there is one. The identity of the Highest Priestess is also unknown. It is believed that the public leadership is actually relatively low-ranking and has no substantial influence. In fact, there are suspicions that the public leadership and public-facing policies are really blinds and distractions.

Observed Behaviors

The Church and its public leadership appear to believe in a theocratic system where the Church is also the secular leadership. They are strongly expansionist (a significant change from the pre-Cataclysm church, which was isolationist to a fault) and strongly seem to believe in retaking the Nocthian Caldera from the tribes who have occupied it and from Wyrmhold. Within the fold they are peaceful and generous; to strangers they are welcoming but reserved. They will give things but not themselves. Strangers who marry members must join the Church or their partner will be expelled; no mixed marriages are allowed.

Unlike the pre-Cataclysm church, they accept that males have rights (although all of the circles beyond the second-outermost are closed to them, as are all of the clerical positions) and they do not believe in sequestering artifacts.

There are rumors of licentious orgy-style rituals under the moonlight for those not of the laity, but those are unconfirmed and rather unlikely--the Nocthis worshipers are generally more prudish and reserved than the rest of the Byssian population.
