Formshaper

From Dreams of Hope

Formshapers, unlike conventional mages, don't manipulate external aether into resonant patterns. Instead, they study the essential nature of forms themselves--finding the platonic ideal of a concept and then using their personal aether to replicate this concept, often in the form of a pseudo-physical object. Often, this "form" has a blue glow and looks as if it is made out of solidified light.

Formshapers and conventional spell-casters are often at odds--the search for the ideal of the form is hampered by the twisting of aether involved in casting spells. And the level of control over one own's aether makes spells less effective against an experienced formshaper. As such, many cultures have trained formshapers as mage-killers or wardens for magically-endowed prisoners. In return, spell-casting-dominated cultures have often outlawed or strictly controlled the study of formshaping.

Forms

Note: these aren't being used by anything right now.

Ankheg Gorget

A chitinous gorget of dull gold encircles your throat. You gain resistance to acid damage. Active effect: As an action or as an attack in the Attack action you can expend a shaping die to spit acid. Make a proficient ranged attack roll using your shaping modifier against a creature within 60 feet of you. On a hit, the creature takes acid damage equal to one roll of your shaping die + your shaping modifier.

Astral Wings (level 5)

You sprout wings made of electric blue aether. You gain a flying speed equal to your walking speed. Active effect: When you would take damage from a ranged attack or ability that forced a Dexterity saving throw, you can expend a shaping die. The damage you take is reduced by the amount you rolled plus your shaping modifier.

Beast Mask

A mask of aether patterned after an animal's head appears over your face, although your vision is not obstructed. While you are shaping this form, you have expertise in Animal Handling and can use that skill to influence beasts and beast-like monstrosities as if you were using a Charisma check. Active Effect: As an action, roll a shaping die and choose up to half your proficiency bonus in beasts or monstrosities that can see you within 60 ft. Each target must make a Charisma saving throw against your shaping DC. On a failed save, the creatures are charmed by you for one minute and cannot attack you or your allies while charmed. If the result of the d20 is under the number you rolled on your shaping die and they fail the saving throw, they are instead turned to your side and will attack your enemies for 1 minute, although you cannot command them. After the domination effect ends, they will attempt to flee if possible, turning hostile if not. On a successful save, the targets are frightened of you until the end of their next turn and then immune to further effects from this form for 24 hours.

Bulwark Armor

Your armor is overlaid with a transparent tracery of gold aether. You do not take extra damage from critical hits against you. Active effect. When you are targeted by an attack, you can expend a shaping die to increase your armor class against the triggering attack by half the maximum value of the shaping die (d6 -> +3, d8 -> +4, d10 -> +5)

Circlet of Non-Interference

A circlet of blazing golden aether with a central "gem" of electric blue encircles your forehead. You make Wisdom saving throws against charm, fear, and domination effects at advantage. Active Effect. When you make a Wisdom saving throw, you can roll a shaping die and add the total to the result of the saving throw. You can do this after you know whether you succeeded or failed on the saving throw.

Disruption Armbands

Bands of shimmering silver aether inscribed with electric-blue glyphs encircle your wrists. When you hit a construct, undead, or fiend with a weapon attack, you ignore any resistance or immunity to damage types they may have. Active Effect: When you hit a construct, undead, or fiend with a weapon attack, you can roll a shaping die and add the result to the damage dealt. If you are level 11 or higher, the target must also make a Constitution saving throw against your shaping DC. On a failed save they are stunned until the end of your next turn.

Doppleganger's Vestments

Your clothing and armor blurs under a mutable shroud of aether. While you are shaping this form, you are under the effects of disguise self. Active Effect: When you make a Charisma check to influence someone, you can roll a shaping die and add the amount rolled to the check result.

Dragon Mask

A mask of ruby aether in the form of a red dragon's head appears over your face. While you are shaping this form, you have expertise in Intimidation and can use your shaping modifier instead of Charisma on those checks. Active Effect: As an action, roll a shaping die and choose a number of creatures up to half your proficiency bonus that can see you within 60 ft. Each target must make a Wisdom saving throw against your shaping DC. On a failed save, the creatures are frightened of you. If the result of the d20 is under the number you rolled on your shaping die and they fail the saving throw, they are so frightened that they cannot move or take any action. Frightened creatures can attempt the saving throw at the end of each turn, ending the effect on a success.

Gecko Boots

Gleaming green aether forms over your feet. While you are shaping this form, you have a climb speed equal to your walking speed and do not require hands to climb. Active Effect. ...

Ghost Ribbon

passive perfect darkvision (60 ft). Activate as reaction to blink through obstacles.

Elemental Gloves

passive resist <element>. Spend die to add <element> damage on hits (mini-smites).

Mask of Eyes

passive bonus to perception. Spend die to add to initiative.

Ogre-grip Gauntlets

can grapple bigger/shove further. Spend die to add to grapple/shove checks.

Shadow Cloak

A cloak of opaque aetheric shadow wraps around you. When you Hide, you can add your shaping modifier to the check total. Active Effect: When you are hidden and hit with an attack, you can roll a shaping die and add the amount rolled to the damage done.

Thunderstep Boots

passive speed increase. Activate on hit after moving to deal thunder damage and stun target (1 turn)
