Lunar Origin

From Dreams of Hope

This is a variant of the Dragonlance Lunar Origin, modified to fit Quartus and its moons/philosophy better.

The two moons of Quartus are Quella and Teki. Quella is a red moon with a 32 day cycle, associated with femininity, order, and desire. Teki is white, with an 8 day cycle, and is associated with purity, mystery and justice.

Sorcerers born of lunar influence vary like the light from the moons, embodying the protective, nurturing, yet alluring nature of Quella or the harsher, purifying, energizing, yet mysterious nature of Teki.

Whenever you finish a long rest, you can choose what lunar influence manifests its power through your magic: Quella or Teki. While under the chosen influence, you gain access to additional spells as shown in the Lunar Spells table. They count as sorcerer spells for you and do not count against the number of sorcerer spells you know.

While under the chosen influence, you can cast one 1st-level spell of the associated influence in the Lunar Spells table once without expending a spell slot. Once you cast a spell in this way, you can’t do so again until you finish a long rest.

Moon Fire

Starting at 1st level, you can call down the radiant light of the moon on command. You learn the Sacred Flame spell, which doesn’t count against the number of sorcerer cantrips you know. When you cast the spell, you can target one creature as normal or target two creatures within range that are within 5 feet of each other.

Lunar Boons

Starting at 6th level, the current influence of your Lunar Embodiment can affect your Metamagic feature. Each Lunar Embodiment influence is associated with certain schools of magic, as shown here:

  • Quella: Enchantment, Evocation, and Transmutation
  • Teki: Abjuration, Divination, and Illusion

Whenever you use Metamagic on a spell of a school of magic associated with your current Lunar Embodiment influence, you can reduce the sorcery points spent by 1 (minimum 0). You can reduce the sorcery points spent for your Metamagic a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest

Lunar Harmony

Starting at 6th level, you can wield some of the power of both moons simultaneously. Regardless of which influence you are under, you can cast one of the 1st level spells of the other influence once without expending a spell slot. Once you do so, you can’t cast that spell that way again until you finish a long rest.

In addition, you can change your Lunar Influence when you complete a short rest as well as a long rest.

Lunar Empowerment

Starting at 14th level, the power of a lunar influence saturates your being. While you are in a Lunar Embodiment influence, you also gain the following benefit associated with that influence:

  • Quella: When you are attacked by a creature you can see, you can expend 1 sorcery point and your reaction to force the creature to make a Charisma saving throw against your spell save DC. On a failed save, the attack misses. You can use this after you see the attack roll but before the damage or other effects are applied In addition, you have advantage on Charisma (Deception) or Charisma (Persuasion) checks and allies within 10 feet have advantage on saving throws against being frightened or charmed.
  • Teki: You can use a bonus action to shed bright light in a 10-foot radius and dim light for an additional 10 feet or to douse the light. In addition, you and creatures of your choice have advantage on Intelligence (Investigation) and Wisdom (Perception) checks while within the bright light you shed. In addition, you and all creatures of your choice within the bright light have resistance to poison damage and advantage on saving throws against being poisoned.

Lunar Phenomenon

At 18th level, as a bonus action, you can tap into a special power of your current Lunar Embodiment influence.

  • Quella: You radiate crimson moonlight, dimly illuminating a 30-foot radius until the end of your next turn. Creatures of your choice within the moonlight have disadvantage on attack rolls. Additionally, as part of the bonus action used to activate this option, and as a bonus action on your next turn, one creature of your choice in the moonlight regains 3d8 hit points.
  • Teki: You radiate silver moonlight, brightly illuminating a 30-foot radius until the end of your next turn. Creatures of your choice within the area or that start their turn or enter the moonlight for the first time on a turn take 3d8 radiant damage and must make a Constitution saving throw against your spell-save DC, becoming blinded until the moonlight ends on a failure. In addition, all creatures of your choice within the moonlight gain the benefit of lesser restoration when the effect begins.

Once you use one of these bonus action benefits, you can’t use that benefit again until you finish a long rest, unless you spend 5 sorcery points to use it again.
