Meara
A large village (~700 inhabitants) in the Steelflower Woods in eastern Sha'slar Autonomous Zone, located about a day ENE from Ala'dar and a day SW of Yala. Locally known for its insular, unfriendly attitude to others. Built near the shore of Lake Me'na, it is also notable for the ancient aelvar-constructed towers located north of town. A secretive religious sect, independent of the Church of the Queen Ascendant, occupies the site and denies entry to all outsiders. They have substantial influence over the town as well.
Amenities
Only one inn will treat with outsiders--the Old Bridge Inn (which, despite its name, is no where near a stream or river or bridge). The local cult forbids music or dancing, so no entertainment is allowed. The inn charges extortionate rates, as it is the only place for caravans.
People
Niox Rufa The head of the cult wears an owl mask. From his voice, he's an older man. Can be heard preaching the doctrine of the cult, but doesn't interact with outsiders.
Adelophis Copis The "voice" of the cult, this serpent-masked woman is the only one who interacts with outsiders.
Cult Doctrine
- We are all unworthy servants, and the masters will return soon and punish us.
- Hope only lies is quiet, hard work to rebuild their palaces. The only promise is a painless obliteration when the masters return, rather than endless torment.
- Music and art are distractions that lure the faithful from the truth.
- The holy places of the masters must not be disturbed by profane hands.
- The faithful must hide their identities behind masks to erase any sense of ego or self.
