Nocthians

The human residents of the Nocthian Caldera from ancient times up until just after the Cataclysm. Devout worshipers of the Old God Nocthis in her aspect as Lady of Mystery, they were a matriarchal culture that eschewed entanglements with the outside. Secretive in the extreme, they remained a distinct nation even during the most expansionist parts of Tibor Imperia's reign. How they managed this is unknown, although some believe that it had to do with the dormant volcano slumbering under Mount Nyx.

During the post-Imperial era, the Nocthians started accumulating artifacts and items of power by hook or crook, including sending covert squads to "acquire" them by force. This they did believing that it was their religious duty to keep those secrets out of the hands of those that could not be trusted.

During the Cataclysm War the Nocthians managed to withstand the Army of Chaos through means that are not quite clear, although some evidence points to an army of mechanical constructs commanded by something called the Deep Mind. Very soon afterward (by 45 AC), an unknown force made the entire Nocthian people flee through a secret tunnel to the south, becoming the ancestors of the modern Night's Children of Byssia.
