Oblivion Gate

From Dreams of Hope

At the center of the abyss, at the nadir of existence lies the Oblivion Gate. This roughly-spherical mass of indeterminate size (for it swells and shrinks; no two observers can agree on its size) is a living wound in the fabric of the Dream, the cancer from which the jotnari spring. Its spores, they carry destruction and entropy into all things. It is said that any entity that touches or is touched by the Gate, no matter how slight the contact, ceases to exist, devoured by that thing, although absence of thing-ness might be a better, although clumsier phrase. It is also said that it reaches out tendrils of itself and that to get too close is to be drawn inexorably closer until one is destroyed.

Some claim that the Gate itself is an entity with thoughts and identity, albeit alien and incomprehensible to others. Others see it as an insensate force of anti-nature, entropy personified. Some claim that the matter it destroys is simply gone; others (especially Nidus claim that the Gate is deconstructing the matter, learning from it, absorbing whatever capabilities it possesed, and becoming more "intelligent" with everything it absorbs.
