A major branch family of the Jala family and the most wealthy powerful family in Jaora district. It's said that they could and would take the throne except that the backward, traditional peasants would revolt. They chafe somewhat under the traditionalistic ways common in the district and look to Mirzapor for inspiration.

Main Family

  • Head: Ashgala Norbrook (70 F). Younger sister to Rajaput Jala. Known to be a grasping, hard woman. Widow, outlived 3 husbands (2 died in the wars with the Ship Folk). Has several "maids" (all young pretty girls) that are her confidants.
  • Pala Norbrook (heir, 45 F). Itching for her turn on the high seat. Married to a local noblewoman, but has 3 children of her own; her wife has 4 of her own, all of them by different male donors. Very infatuated with Mirzapor culture.
  • Jacob Norbrook (42 M). Serious, business minded. Keeps out of politics. Widower, his wife died along with their first child during childbirth. Has not remarried, nor seems interested in doing so.

Jala Children

A significant source of intra-family friction is the presence of all of the other children of Rajaput Jala and Salira Jala, assigned to the lower-status family by tradition once a new Jala head took the throne. In many ways, they act as if they are really in charge.

  • Sala Mirz'al (52 F). Married Alka Mirz'al (of one of the branch families of the Mirza). Believes herself (and her children) much too good for this backwater, preferring to live at her husband's estates in Mirzapor. She was instrumental in arranging the upcoming marriage of Elise D'Arcy to Bureaugard Jala.
  • Iris Narbrook (52 F). Identical twin to Sala. Spinster, she refused further attempts at marriage when her lover (of no particular family) was killed under shady circumstances. She is a historian of stories and legends, especially of the Dragon Tyrant's Reign. She is at odds with the rest of the family and lives in Old Town.
  • Alana Narbrook (50 F). Fraternal twin to Rajai Jala. She left the family a few decades ago to live, study, and work in Fatehpur as an arcanist specializing in elemental behavior.
  • Elen Narbrook (42 F). Tyrant Queen of the social scene, she knows all the proprieties and expects everyone else to follow them as well. Married to a local second-house noble who is a total wallflower in her much more domineering presence. Very easily offended and scandalized.
  • Toral Narbrook (40 M). Plantation owner/manager for the family. Worries mostly about business. Known to be able to talk your ears off about silkworms. Colossal bore.

Others

  • Alex of Varan'a (37 M). Mercenary and head of the hired Narbrook guards. Of a notable family in Varanasi, but estranged. Known for being fair but not suffering fools gladly. Commands about 400 standing troops.
