The Waste is a layer of Shadow that should not exist. The Waste is formed when the other layers (the Border Shadow, Mirrorhaven, and Beastholme) get compressed into one by the passage of significant abyssal influence. Usually, an area of the Mortal plane experiences a proliferation of demon summoning, blood magic, necromancy (specifically the creation of undead), or other massive trauma. This trauma and the passage of so many jotnar erodes the barriers between the layers and between the Mortal and Shadow, resulting in a contamination.

In an area of the Waste, entry from the Abyss is facilitated and jotnar can leak through un-prompted. This often results in the contamination of spirits who dwell there after death, converting them into demons. Demons prowl, consuming souls. The land itself is twisted and barren, with hostile shadow creations springing up to plague those who dwell there.

Before the breaking of the Pact with Death, it was the responsibility of the cysgoroesi to work to heal these areas, using the Ebony Rod and harp. They were assisted by devils, paid as mercenaries to fight the inner fight (much like the angels fight the eternal war on the outer boundaries of the Dream). Since then, only the efforts of the devils and the Blightguard have kept the waste somewhat in check.

The most frequent demonic troops seen in the waste belong to the Twisted and the Red Fang. The Jester, as well as Oro-laen and Lloitira have much less impact. In fact, the latter two have been known to surreptitiously aid in efforts to contain the worst areas of the Waste.

Significant Wasted Areas

The Blight
Located correspondingly to the Great Eastern Dustlands of Noefra, this is the biggest hot spot in all of Shadow. The Red Fang's presence is strong here.
The Ashlands
Located opposite of Moon's Fall Vengeance, this area seethes with angry arcane-tinged demons.
The Gnashing Fangs
Located opposite of the Blood-thirst Wildlands, this area is still contaminated with Twisted forces.
Thorn and Claw
Located opposite of North Ithemba in Soefra, this is the (healing) remnant of the mark left by Lloitira and the Red Fang's attempt to break through into the Mortal in 212 AC.
