Kaua

From Dreams of Hope

The kaua were created by the Kel'tan Empire during the early years (roughly 2000 BC) at the same time the udaaka were created. A variant of the basic udaaka bird/hobgoblin chimerae, the kaua lack the flight of the udaaka. Instead they have stronger bones and instinctive mimicry abilities that make them excellently suited to be messengers, recorders, and spies.

Most of them can repeat any phrase they've heard at least once, exactly mimicking the voice of the speaker(s). Those with training and talent can reproduce entire conversations with multiple speakers. The kaua have leveraged this ability to achieve status higher than any of the other beast-born races in Kel'tan or their client states. The kaua live in large family groups called flights, each flight sworn to serve a landed pure-blood noble. No other may require their services. They serve as spies, assassins, secret police, and privy messengers for the nobles of Kel'tan and are considered unflaggingly loyal.

Very few kaua have ventured outside of the Solar Highlands, and only two have made it to Noefra in recent history; the adventurer Crow and Ekek Caw, intelligence officer in service to Phoenix Princess Leina'lor'al'iera sur Kel'tan.
